Informed Choices

The midwives & assistants of Eden Birth & Wellness attend you with the skill & gentleness that upholds The Midwives Model of Care.

We believe in supporting and protecting the normal birth process. We know this to be the most appropriate for the majority of women during pregnancy and childbirth.

While we are experts in normal birth, we are trained and equipped to prevent or correct variations and even some complications - and we also put into effect a smooth transfer to further medical attention when needed.

Some facts:

Birth is a normal event. It is a natural process inherited by women.

Babies are aware, sensitive human beings, even while being born.

Homebirth, birth center or hospital birth can all be safe options.

Making informed choices mean becoming educated about what's available, the real benefits and risks, what tests, interventions and medications might be used during your pregnancy, birth and after the baby is born.

Informed consent should include the right to informed refusal. Individual choices and beliefs about what is right for you and your baby, should be supported.

Statistics in the United States show that for low-risk women, homebirth does not mean a higher risk of complications, yet birth in most hospitals does average a 34% chance of having a surgical (c-section) birth.

A woman who is told she is "high-risk" can find out what current or previous condition was used to determine that diagnosis -- and is it evidence-based or just the opinion of a practitioner or an organization?

Many standard medical tests, procedures, technologies, and drugs carry risks to both mother and baby, and should be avoided in the absence of specific scientific indications for their use.

It is important to receive accurate and up-to-date information about the benefits and risks of all procedures, drugs, and tests without having them imposed upon you.

Interventions should not be applied routinely during pregnancy, birth, or the postpartum period.

If complications arise during pregnancy, birth, or the postpartum period, method of care should be evidence-based, for which your informed choices should also apply.

Each caregiver is responsible for the quality of care she or he provides.

Individuals are ultimately responsible for making informed choices about the health care they and their babies receive.
