What we know...
Between 1976 and 2008, accurate studies and comparisons with women of matched risk factors, gestation, presentation of baby, number of pregnancies, age, education race and other socio-economic factors, and with trained attendants, revealed the following:
3X increase in cesarean section for these women whose births began at a hospital. Further, the women
and babies with hospital births had undergone 20X more use of forceps, with most hospital birth induced with an oxytocin or other drug to
accelerate or induce labor, and greater incidence of episiotomy (and more severe tears in need of major repair). Some hospitals showed 6X more fetal distress in labor, 5X more cases of maternal
hypertension (high blood pressure), and 3X greater incidence of postpartum hemorrhage. There was 4X more infection among the newborn and 3X more babies that needed help to begin breathing. (In the 1976 study,
in hospital there were thirty
cases of birth injuries -- skull fractures, facial nerve palsies, brachial nerve injuries, severe cephalohematomas -- but none of those injuries in the home births.)
